REGULATIONS
for the Fifth International Olympiad for the secondary
school students “Caucasus Mathematical Olympiad”
1. General Regulations
1.1. The present regulations for the fifth International Olympiad for secondary school students “Caucasus Mathematical Olympiad” (further on referred to as the “Olympiad”) specify the rules for organizing and hosting the Olympiad in 2020, its organizational and methodological support, entry and participation rules for the students as well as covering the winners and award recipients selection process (further on referred to as the “Regulations”).
1.2. The goal of the Olympiad is:
to create a cultural and educational environment, to form and strengthen friendships among school children who are interested in Math from Southern Russia, the Caucasus, and the Black Sea countries.
1.3. The aims of the Olympiad are:
to discover and develop mathematical skills in students;
to prepare students for the final round of Russian Mathematical Olympiad and final rounds of National Olympiads in other participating countries;
to facilitate all kinds of work with mathematically gifted children;
to promote Mathematics as a science.
1.4. Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Adygea is the founder of the Olympiad in 2020 (further on referred to as the “Founder”).

Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Adygea, Federal State Budget Educational Institution of Higher Education “Adyghe State University,” State Budget Organization of Additional Education “Regional School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics,” Non-For-Profit Organization “Center for New Technologies in Education ‘Matema’.”
1.6. The Founder approves the Coordination Committee of the Olympiad. The Coordination Committee carries out preliminary work in organizing the Olympiad activities and forms the list of the contestants in accordance with the Regulations. The Founder appoints the Chairperson of the Coordination Committee from the members of the Coordination Committee. The Chairperson is in charge of the on-going work of the Committee.
1.7. Together with the Coordination Committee, the Organizers form the Problem Selection Committee and the Jury. The Founder approves the list of members for both.
1.8. The Problem Selection Committee is responsible for writing problems for the Olympiad and developing evaluation criteria for the solutions of the problems.
1.9. The Jury of the Olympiad:
- checks the contestants’ individual works;
- evaluates solved problems in accordance with the approved criteria;
- shows the results to the Olympiad contestants and discusses the analyses of the Olympiad problems and their solutions;
- deals in person with the appeal claims from the Olympiad contestants;
- selects the winners and award recipients of the Olympiad;
- presents the results of the Olympiad (in the form of reports) to the Organizer for their approval.
Coordination Committee:
- endorses the program of Olympiad activities;
- oversees the admission and handling of all Olympiad applications as well as their rejection process, in accordance with the regulations stipulated;
- handles the registration of the participants;
- coordinates day-to-day responsibilities of the Jury;
- organizes the Award Ceremony;
- carries out other activities and functions in connection to the Olympiad.
1.10. The Olympiad is held in the subject “Mathematics” and includes two stages. Stage one is preliminary long-distance and stage two is carried out in person by each participant.
1.11. The main working languages of the Olympiad are Russian and English. The problems and solutions are given to the participants in Russian and English. If necessary, team leaders from participating countries can translate the problems into their national languages. Team leaders from participating countries can take part in coordinating the works of the contestants from their delegations.
1.12. The participation in the Olympiad is free of charge.
1.13. The official website of the Olympiad is cmo.adygmath.ru/en.
2. Olympiad Participants
2.1. Students invited by the Coordination Council can participate in the 2020 Olympiad. These are students of Grades 8-11 from 15 regions of Southern Russia (Southern and North Caucasus Federal Districts) and students of equivalent grades in the participating countries.
2.2. Any and all students in Grades 8-11 from schools and educational establishments of the Southern regions in Russia (the Southern and North Caucasus regions) can take part in the long-distance stage of the Olympiad.
2.3. The Coordination Council invites the following categories of students of Grades 8-11 from Southern Russia (Southern and North Caucasus Federal District) and students of equivalent grades of the participating countries:
- Students recommended by the Coordination Council as the result of their achievements in the long-distance stage of the Olympiad;
- Winners and award recipients of the final round of the Russian Mathematical Olympiad in Grades 9-10 in the 2018-2019 school year or school students of Southern Russia who were winners in the final round of the Euler Olympiad in the 2018-2019 school year;
- students in Grades 9, 10, and 11 who won in the regional rounds of the Russian Mathematical Olympiad in 2019-2020 or students from Southern Russia who won in the regional rounds of the Euler Olympiad in 2019-2020;
- students of Grades 9-11 in Southern Russia who did not become the winners but showed the best results in the regional round of the Russian Mathematical Olympiad in the 2019-2020 school year. The Coordination Committee compiles the list of these students;
- Students of Grades 7-8 in Southern Russia who did not become the winners but showed the best results in the regional round of the Euler Olympiad in the 2019-2020 school year. The Coordination Committee compiles the list of these students;
- Students who show high results in mastering the program of the “Sirius” Education Center and who are recommended to participate in the Olympiad by the Pedagogical Council of the Southern Mathematical Camp at the “Sirius” Education Center. The list of students is negotiated with the Coordination Council;
- Students from foreign countries who were the winners of the regional and final rounds of the National Mathematical Olympiad.
3. Time and Location of the Olympiad
3.1. The first (long-distance) stage of the Olympiad will take place on February 2. The regulation criteria will be available on the official website of the Olympiad no later than January 15 2020. The second in-person stage of the Olympiad will take place on March 13-18, 2020.
3.2. The location of the Olympiad is Maykop, Republic of Adygea, Russian Federation.
4. The Procedures of the Olympiad
4.1. The Olympiad includes two age leagues consisting of school students from Southern Russia and equivalent grades in the participating countries:
- Junior league: students of Grades 8-9;
- Senior league: students of Grades 10-11.
4.2. The Olympiad consists of two rounds. In each round, contestants are asked to solve four problems.
4.3. Each round lasts four astronomical hours.
5. Winners and Award Recipients Selection Procedure
5.1. The winners and award recipients in the Olympiad are determined according to their individual scores.
5.2. To determine the winners and award recipients, a rating table with the contestants’ results is created. The table includes the list of the contestants sorted by the scores from the highest to the lowest.
5.3. The number of winners and award recipients in each league is approved by the Olympiad Organizers based on the presented scores from the Jury.
5.4. The winners of the Olympiad receive gold medals and first place diplomas; the award recipients receive silver medals and second place diplomas or bronze medals and third place diplomas.
5.5. Contestants who had high scores but did not become winners or award recipients receive certificates of honorable mention from the Olympiad Organizers.
6. Financing of the Olympiad
6.1. All expenses for the organization of the Olympiad are covered by the public funding expenditures of the Republic of Adygea, organizers’ own finances, and by the sponsors. There is no participation fee for the contestants.
6.2. The Olympiad Organizers cover all expenses for accommodation, food, and participation in cultural events for each contestant and no more than two leaders of each delegation.
6.3. The Olympiad Organizers do not cover life and health insurance and travel expenses to and from the Olympiad for the contestants and leaders of the delegations.
